Protein and Muscle Mass Study

This study is assessing the effectiveness of a yeast protein on muscle mass and strength.

To help with this study, we’re looking for healthy males aged over 40 years, living in Brisbane (or nearby) who currently undertake (or have in the recent past) cardio exercise like cycling, swimming or walking and would like to add some strength training to their routine.

Please note, if you’re currently exercising more than 5 times a week or doing resistance training like lifting weights or doing push ups more than once a week, you will not be eligible to participate in this study.

Why is this study being conducted?

The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of yeast protein, compared to whey protein and a placebo, on muscle mass and strength.

Yeast protein represents a sustainable, eco-friendly and safe high-quality plant-based protein source that may aid in developing muscle mass and strength and have added immune and gastrointestinal benefits. However, more research is needed to determine if it is as effective at increasing muscle mass and strength as whey protein.

How long is the study, and when does it start?

Participation in this study is 8 weeks. During this time, you’ll be asked to attend our clinic in Newstead, Brisbane, on 3 occasions.

To make the timings of these visits as convenient as possible to you, we are recruiting on a rolling basis which means that the start date is flexible.

The timings of assessments are:

  • Your initial assessment at a date convenient to you (we are open Monday-Saturday)
  • Your midpoint assessment approximately 4 weeks after your initial visit
  • Your final assessment approximately 8 weeks after your initial visit

What is required of participants?

The study will involve approximately 90 males aged 40-70, who will be participating over an 8 week period. During the 8 weeks, participants will be required to:

  1. Take allocated study product twice daily
  2. Perform 3 short resistance training sessions per week (from home)
  3.  Attend the RDC clinic 3 times for assessments (initial assessment, week 4 and week 8)
  4. Attend scanning clinic 2 times for DXA scan (initial and week 8)
At each visit you will be required to:
  • complete questionnaires,
  • have body measurements taken,
  • undertake exercise assessments (leg press, bench press), and
  • provide a blood sample.
About the exercise program…

You will be prescribed an 8-week exercise program consisting of resistance training of major muscle groups both in the upper and lower body. The program is designed to be undertaken anywhere using bodyweight for intensity (no equipment required).

The program comprises 3 sessions per week (2 sessions in weeks 4 & 8), each approximately 30-40 mins in duration.

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) will oversee your program and assessments. Additional assistance will be available by phone or video calls.

About the study products…

Once enrolled in the study, you will be allocated to 1 of 3 product groups. As this study is placebo controlled, you may or may not be allocated one of the protein products. Participants will be randomly assigned to a product group in a 1:1:1 ratio; therefore, you have a 33% chance of being assigned to the placebo group.

Your allocated study product is to be taken twice daily as a 20g dose in powder form (total daily dose of 40g).

 

  1. Yeast Protein Group
    Yeast protein is derived from yeast, and commonly used in baking. It is a complete protein providing the nine essential amino acids that the body needs to get from food. There is some evidence to suggest that it may also provide an effective source of protein for aiding muscle development.
  1. Whey Protein Group
    Whey Protein is the protein contained in whey. Whey protein is commonly used to aid athletic performance and increase strength.
  1. Placebo Group
    The placebo used in this study is a powdered carbohydrate.

  • Male, aged 40-70
  • Generally healthy with a BMI between 20.0-34.9 (see BMI calculator on this page)
  • Non-smoker
  • Currently undertaking (or have undertaken in the recent past) low impact cardio exercise like walking, swimming or cycling up to 5 times per week.
  • Not currently undertaking resistance/strength exercise like push ups or lifting weights more than once per week
  • Agree not to take supplements (eg. protein, testosterone) or medications (eg. steroid) aimed at stimulating muscle growth for the duration of the trial
  • Able to commit to taking the study product daily for 8 weeks and attend our clinic site in Newstead 3 times
  • Willing to participate in an exercise program at home for 8 weeks
